Gastritis is a condition where the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed or irritated. It can be caused by various factors, including infections (especially Helicobacter pylori bacteria), frequent use of painkillers (like NSAIDs), alcohol consumption, stress, or spicy foods. Symptoms of gastritis often include upper abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and a burning feeling in the stomach. In some cases, it may also cause indigestion or black, tarry stools if bleeding occurs. Gastritis can be acute (sudden and short-term) or chronic (long-lasting). Treatment usually involves dietary changes, avoiding triggers, and medications such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors (like omeprazole), or antibiotics if an infection is present.

Background
Victoria is a total orphan, having been abandoned as a baby before being rescued and placed in an orphanage. The home was introduced to Helpster through a site visit by Tionycare Hospital in collaboration with Helpster volunteer Vincent. Victoria has been well until three days ago when she developed headaches and burning peri-umbilical pain accompanied by diarrhea. She was diagnosed with gastritis.
Medical history
Victoria Jeptim, a young girl, began experiencing frequent headaches and peri-umbilical abdominal pain that was often accompanied by diarrhea. The discomfort affected her daily routine, and she felt weak and unwell. Concerned about her condition, she visited the health facility for medical attention. After a careful evaluation, the doctor diagnosed her with gastritis, likely caused by an infection and irritation of the stomach lining. To treat her condition, she was prescribed esomeprazole to reduce stomach acid and allow healing, metronidazole to target any bacterial infection, and albendazole to treat possible parasitic worms contributing to her digestive symptoms. Paracetamol was also given to relieve the headaches and any general body pain. Victoria followed the treatment plan carefully, taking her medications as instructed and adjusting her diet to avoid irritating foods. Within a few days, the abdominal pain eased, the diarrhea stopped, and her energy began to return. After completing the treatment, Victoria made a full recovery and was soon back to her normal, healthy routine.
Prognosis
The patient has been assessed, diagnosed and given treatment. She is now doing much better. However, if gastritis is left untreated, the inflammation in the stomach lining can worsen over time, leading to more serious complications. It may result in stomach ulcers, which are painful sores in the stomach wall, or cause bleeding from the stomach lining. In chronic cases, untreated gastritis can lead to atrophic gastritis, where the stomach lining thins and loses function, increasing the risk of nutrient deficiencies like vitamin B12 or iron. In rare cases, long-term untreated gastritis—especially when caused by Helicobacter pylori infection—can increase the risk of developing stomach cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent these complications and promote healing.
