Allan is a four-year-old boy living with his grandmother in a remote village. They stay in a small, muddy two-room hut. His grandmother cooks using firewood collected from the forest, and they rely on stream water located a 45-minute walk away. They also share a pit latrine with neighbours and passers-by. To earn a small income for their daily meals, the grandmother sells firewood in the nearby market. Allan’s mother dropped out of school and moved to the city to work as a house help due to lack of school fees and basic needs, leaving the child under the grandmother’s care without support. The grandmother brought Allan to the health facility after two days of severe vomiting, high fever, cough, runny nose, and diarrhea. She also reported that for the past two weeks, the child had painful rashes with pus around the genital and anal areas. After assessment and investigations, Allan was diagnosed with severe pneumonia, severe dehydration due to the diarrhea, and dermatitis. The grandmother had initially tried treating him with traditional medicine, but his condition continued to deteriorate. During routine home visits, community health promoters found the child in poor condition, brought him to the facility, and alerted the Helpster Charity coordinator. He was then enrolled into the Helpster Charity program, and treatment was initiated immediately.

Allan was brought to the hospital by his grandmother after experiencing persistent vomiting, cough, runny nose, diarrhea, and painful skin rashes with pus around the genital and anal areas. On arrival, he appeared dehydrated and unwell. Laboratory tests confirmed severe diarrhea with dehydration, pneumonia, and dermatitis. His grandmother had previously attempted to manage the symptoms using traditional remedies, but the child’s condition continued to worsen. Community health promoters identified his deteriorating state during routine home visits, facilitated his transfer to the facility, and notified the Helpster Charity coordinator. Allan was immediately enrolled into the Helpster Charity program, where treatment was promptly initiated. He responded well to medical management, gradually stabilized, and eventually made a full recovery. Allan was discharged home in good condition.

With the timely medical intervention, Allan’s prognosis is very good. He has already been diagnosed for severe pneumonia and severe dehydration resulting from diarrhea. These conditions can be life-threatening if not managed promptly, especially in young children. With continued administration of antibiotics, rehydration therapy, fever control, nutritional support, and close monitoring, his breathing is expected to improve steadily, and the dehydration should resolve. His skin condition (dermatitis) is also expected to heal with proper wound care and medication.
