Renny O., 8

Renny is the eldest child in his family. He originally had four siblings, but one of his brothers recently passed away shortly before Renny also fell ill. He lives with his parents and three siblings in a small one-room mud house that leaks whenever it rains. His mother is a peasant farmer, while his father earns a living as a casual laborer. According to his mother, on the day he became unwell, Renny returned from school complaining of headache, fever, and fatigue. On his way home, he met his father, who took him to a nearby pharmacy where he was tested and treated on credit. He received an injection and was scheduled for another dose the following day. However, by the next morning, his parents noticed his condition had worsened, prompting them to take him to Rwambwa Hospital. After being stabilized there, he was referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further management.

Renny was brought to the hospital with history of recurring anaemia and malaria. He presented to the hospital with complains of headaches, general body weakness and fever. His lab results returned positive for malaria, septicemia . He was also diagnosed with severe pneumonia and sickle cell disease. This prompted admission to the ward where he stayed for over a week. In the ward he was administered morphine, IV artesunate, cetriaxone among other drugs. He responded well to treatment and was duly discharged with a review to happen after a fortnight. A call to the mother revealed he was taking his medication well and could play with his friends.
