Anemia is a medical condition in which the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the tissues. This can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, pale skin, and dizziness. Anemia may result from various causes, including nutritional deficiencies (like iron, vitamin B12, or folate), chronic diseases, blood loss, or bone marrow disorders. The condition can range from mild to severe and may be temporary or long-term, depending on the underlying cause. Diagnosis is typically made through blood tests, and treatment focuses on addressing the root cause—such as iron supplements for iron-deficiency anemia or managing chronic illnesses contributing to the condition.

Background
Stellah was rescued from Pokot by the police at the age of 12 due to female genital mutilation and early marriage. She has been living at the orphanage ever since she was rescued. The orphanage was introduced to Helpster through a site visit conducted by Tionycare Hospital in collaboration with Helpster volunteer, Vincent. Stellah remained in good health until about five days ago when she developed headaches and back pain. She was evaluated and diagnosed with anemia, for which she received treatment. She is now steadily recovering.
Medical history
Stellah, a 19-year-old girl, had been struggling with frequent headaches and a persistent backache that made it hard for her to concentrate in class and carry out daily activities. Concerned about her worsening condition, she visited the clinic, where blood tests revealed that she was suffering from anemia. The doctor prescribed a treatment plan that included Piroxicam to relieve her pain, Vitaglobin to boost her iron and vitamin levels, and IFAS (Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation) to help restore healthy red blood cell production. Stellah followed the treatment faithfully, made changes to her diet by including more iron-rich foods, and ensured she got enough rest. Over the next few weeks, her symptoms gradually eased - her headaches became less frequent, her energy levels improved, and the backache subsided. With proper treatment and care, Stellah regained her strength and was soon back to her normal routine, feeling healthier and more focused than before.
Prognosis
Stellah was diagnosed with anemia and given the necessary treatment. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent adverse outcomes. She is progressing well. The prognosis is good.
