Hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates refers to the abnormal enlargement of the inferior nasal turbinates - bony structures inside the nose covered with mucosa - that help filter, humidify, and warm the air we breathe. When these turbinates become enlarged, they can obstruct normal airflow through the nasal passages. The enlarged turbinates can block sinus drainage pathways, preventing mucus from draining effectively and causing chronic sinusitis. This leads to mucus accumulation, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and resulting in persistent inflammation of the sinus lining—clinically recognized as chronic sinusitis. Symptoms often include nasal congestion, facial pressure, headaches, postnasal drip, and recurrent sinus infections.

Background
Moses was abandoned at the hospital at the age of one and later placed at the Children’s Home, where he has grown up under the care and support of well-wishers. From an early age, he experienced breathing difficulties, and as he grew older, he was diagnosed with hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates. He continues to struggle with chronic sinus problems, enlarged nasal turbinates and enlarged tonsils, which have affected his breathing and contributed to nasal deformation. Despite these health challenges, Moses has remained calm, resilient, and focused. He has a passion for basketball and dreams of pursuing a future in Information Technology. Currently, he is studying a secretarial course, showing determination in his education and personal ambitions. His journey reflects strength, perseverance, and great potential for the future.
Medical history
Moses munyaka, an 18-year-old male with persistent nasal obstruction, snoring, and rhinorrhea was admitted and diagnosed with obstructive hypertrophic inferior turbinates with right nasal septal bowing. He underwent successful surgical management with turbinoplasty, which was completed without complications. Postoperatively, he was treated with antibiotics, analgesics, tranexamic acid, and nasal drops, and was discharged in stable condition with a follow-up appointment scheduled, with a good prognosis and expected improvement in nasal breathing
Prognosis
After undergoing surgery to correct chronic sinusitis and hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates (turbinoplasty), Moses is expected to experience significant improvement in nasal airflow and reduction of sinus-related symptoms, such as congestion, headaches, facial pain, and recurrent infections. Full recovery depends on proper postoperative care, including adherence to nasal hygiene, avoidance of irritants, and follow-up visits. Most patients experience improved quality of life and decreased frequency of sinus infections within weeks to a few months after surgery.
