Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Sickle cell disease is as among the group of inherited health conditions that affect the red blood cells. Severe pneumonia, a serious lung infection, requires immediate medical attention, often including hospitalization, and can lead to difficulty in breathing and other serious complications. Acute chest syndrome is a life-threatening complication of sickle cell disease that involves a new pneumonia-like illness in the lungs. It is caused by sickled red blood cells blocking blood flow or by infection, leading to symptoms like chest pain, fever, and difficulty breathing. Acute chest syndrome is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment .

Background
Goodluck is a 9-year-old boy in Grade 4 who dreams of becoming a pilot and enjoys playing with his friends. He comes from a modest family of five, with his father, a small-scale businessman, as the sole provider. The family lives in a single mud-walled hut with an iron sheet roof, highlighting their financial challenges. Without support, Goodluck’s health is at significant risk of deterioration. Goodluck, a known sickle cell patient, was brought to the hospital by his father in severe pain. His condition had worsened to the point where he could no longer walk independently and required a support for mobility. He presented with a severe cough accompanied by chest pain. After a thorough medical evaluation, he was admitted and started on treatment. For over a week, he has remained very weak and unwell, unable to participate in his usual activities at home.
Medical history
Goodluck is a known Sickler and was diagnosed with pneumonia he was admitted and was given antibiotics ,sickle cell drugs and rehydrating fluids. As he started feeling better, he was discharged from the hospital to continue his treatment at home and also advised to continue with outpatient sickle cell clinic. During the check-up call, the Helpster volunteer heard from Goodluck's mother that his son is free from pain and back to his normal life.
Prognosis
Goodluck’s prognosis is guarded but hopeful. His current severe pain crisis and respiratory symptoms indicate an acute complication of sickle cell disease, likely triggered by the pneumonia. With continued medical care, adherence to prescribed medication, adequate hydration, and nutritional support, his condition is expected to improve gradually. However, due to the chronic nature of sickle cell disease, he remains at risk of recurrent pain episodes and other complications if consistent follow-up and preventive care are not maintained.
