Background
Dennis is a happy and cheerful young boy, even though his family faces tough times. He's a big football fan and really looks up to his favorite player, Erling Haaland. In fact, he's such a great player that his friends call him "Haaland" on their local children's football team. Dennis also does well in school and dreams of becoming a doctor when he's older. In his free time, he enjoys helping his mom with chores around the house. Lately, he's had a swelling on his cheeks that started small but has become really painful over time.
Medical history
Dennis has had a swelling on his cheeks that started small but had become really painful over time. He wad diagnosed to be suffering from mumps with a superimposed bacterial infection. Dennis has recieved intravenous medication for three days, and was later discharged home on oral medication. He progressed well and got better.
Prognosis
In males, the mumps virus can infect the testicles, leading to a condition called orchitis. This can result in pain, swelling, and potential fertility issues. Mumps can cause viral meningitis, an inflammation of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, leading to severe headaches and other neurological symptoms. Mumps can potentially cause sensorineural hearing loss, which is permanent hearing damage. Mumps should be treated with pain relievers and fever reducers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help alleviate discomfort and reduce fever.
