Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections

Premature infants are born before 37 weeks of gestation, while low birth weight (LBW) infants weigh less than 2.5 kg (5.5 pounds) at birth. Prematurity and LBW are major contributors to neonatal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Babies born prematurely and/or with low birth weight face a higher risk of developmental disabilities and long-term chronic conditions

Background

Frank's father abandoned the family while Frank's mother was pregnant for him, and his mother now lives with Frank, her aunt, and cousins in a small two-room semi-permanent house. Previously, the mother ran a small grocery business, but she is currently unemployed following the separation. The mother reported experiencing regular menstrual bleeding but often felt unwell and fatigued in the mornings. Suspecting pregnancy, she purchased a test kit from a local pharmacy, which confirmed that she was expectant. She was advised to attend antenatal care (ANC) and attended two ANC visits at four and five months of gestation. Later, she began experiencing abdominal pain and was rushed to the hospital, where she delivered prematurely. Frank was subsequently referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further care. Frank was born weighing 1.050 kg.

Medical history

Frank was born before reaching 9 months and was diagnosed with premature birth, and low birth weight with respiratory distress issues. She was admitted in the new born unit for over 2 months where he was treated on IV x pen, IV gentamicin, caffeine citrate among other drugs. He responded well to treatment and he eventually recovered, he was discharged on orals , Ranferon and ms cal syrup .

Prognosis

Frank a newborn diagnosed with premature birth, low birth weight, and respiratory distress syndrome, has been admitted to Siaya County Referral Hospital. The availability of a fully equipped Newborn Unit with incubators provides a favorable environment for specialized care, including thermal regulation, respiratory support, and close monitoring. With prompt and comprehensive neonatal management, the prognosis is cautiously optimistic. The major risks remain complications of prematurity such as persistent breathing difficulties, feeding challenges, and increased susceptibility to infections. However, early intervention with incubator care, oxygen therapy, and nutritional support significantly improves her chances of survival and healthy growth. If his respiratory symptoms are well managed and weight gain is achieved through supportive feeding, Frank has a good likelihood of stabilizing. Continued follow-up and supportive care will be essential in monitoring her growth and developmental milestones
