Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness

Background

Only one month old, Baby Jayan Rahman was born fragile and underweight at 1.9 kg, alongside his twin sister Jafrin, into a family already crushed by poverty. Their young mother, Afroza Begum, just 19, is struggling alone, while their father, Raju Molla, remains stranded in Bahrain as a victim of human trafficking. The family depends entirely on the grandfather, Shofiq Molla, who earns only BDT 7,000 a month from a tiny tea stall—barely enough to feed six members, let alone pay for medical care. Tragically, both Jayan and Jafrin have been diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a dangerous condition that can leave them permanently blind without urgent treatment. Jayan needs Anti-VEGF injections costing around BDT 18,000, but without this life-changing support, his chance to ever see the world will be lost forever.

Medical history

Jayan Rahman, a 1-month-old infant, was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes, a serious condition that can lead to vision loss if left untreated. Immediate Anti-VEGF injections were provided by Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist, to control the abnormal growth of retinal blood vessels. The treatment process was carried out with great care and close monitoring. Jayan responded positively to the therapy, and follow-up examinations showed steady improvement. The growth of the blood vessels is now under control, and the retinal condition has stabilized. With continued observation, there is strong hope that Jayan will develop clear vision as he grows. Special thanks to Helpster Charity and Helpster Heroes for supporting this timely and essential treatment.

Prognosis

According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist of Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Jayan’s condition requires urgent treatment with Anti-VEGF injections followed by regular monitoring. If given on time, the treatment will protect his retina, prevent further damage, and give him the opportunity to develop normal vision as he grows. However, if left untreated, Jayan will likely lose his vision permanently at this early stage of life. This would not only rob him of his childhood but also limit his education, independence, and entire future.
