Background
Baby Abdul Rakib, a tiny 1-month-old born prematurely at 32 weeks, is fighting hard for a healthy future despite his fragile start in life. His father, a construction worker earning only BDT 10,000 a month, struggles to provide for a family of seven, including two school-going children and elderly parents—one of whom is battling stomach cancer. With food, education, and ongoing medical costs already overwhelming them, the family cannot afford the urgent BDT 18,000 needed for Abdul’s eyesight treatment. Abdul, despite his small size, is a sweet and brave little baby, but without immediate care for his Retinopathy of Prematurity, he risks permanent blindness. This would not only steal his chance to see the world but also add to the family’s immense hardship, making urgent help their only hope
Medical history
Abdul Rakib, a 1-month-old baby boy, was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes, a serious condition that required immediate treatment to prevent possible vision loss. To control the abnormal growth of retinal blood vessels, Anti-VEGF injections were administered by Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist. The treatment was carried out with great care, and his condition was closely monitored through regular follow-up visits. Abdul Rakib responded well to the injections and showed gradual improvement in his retinal condition. The growth of abnormal blood vessels is now under control, and his retinal health has improved. With continued observation, doctors are hopeful that he will develop clear vision as he grows. Prognosis
According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist of Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Abdul urgently requires anti-VEGF (Avastin) injections in both eyes followed by regular monitoring. With timely treatment, his vision can be saved, and he can live a healthy, normal life. However, if the injections are delayed, Abdul may face irreversible blindness, which would severely affect his development, education, and future. The doctors are hopeful that with immediate support, Abdul will be able to overcome this challenge and enjoy the colorful world every child deserves to see.
