Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery is a procedure that creates a new drainage pathway for tears when the natural tear duct is blocked. This surgery is typically performed to relieve excessive tearing and discharge caused by a blocked nasolacrimal duct. DCR can be done through an external incision on the side of the nose or endoscopically through the nasal passages.

Background
Miraj Hossain, a cheerful and active 11-year-old boy, lives in a small tin-made house with his parents, younger sister, and grandmother, all surviving on his father’s irregular income of around 8,000 BDT per month. Despite his bright personality and love for football, Miraj has been struggling with persistent swelling and irritation in his right eye, which doctors diagnosed as a Blocked Nasolacrimal Duct requiring urgent Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery. The 40,500 BDT cost of the procedure is far beyond the family’s means, as they can barely afford food, schooling, and daily necessities. Without treatment, Miraj risks repeated infections, severe pain, and potential vision loss, which would disrupt his education and active childhood. His family anxiously hopes for support to restore their son’s eyesight and allow him to continue learning and playing like other children.
Medical history
Miraj Hossain, an 11-year-old boy, required DCR surgery in his right eye due to a blocked tear duct that was causing constant watering, irritation, and discomfort. The surgery was performed under anesthesia by Dr. Md. Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant of the Hospital, ensuring a safe and carefully managed procedure. Throughout the treatment process, Miraj was closely monitored by the medical team. The surgery went smoothly, and he responded well during the recovery period. Gradually, the symptoms of excessive tearing and irritation reduced significantly. His visual acuity improved, and he now feels much more comfortable in his daily activities. Miraj is now able to see clearly and live more confidently. Special thanks to Helpster Charity and Helpster Heroes for supporting him in regaining comfort and vision in the operated eye.
Prognosis
According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant of Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Miraj needs immediate DCR surgery in his right eye. They are confident that the surgery will relieve his discomfort, prevent recurring infections, and fully restore his vision. If treated in time, Miraj will be able to return to school and enjoy his childhood without pain or difficulty. However, if left untreated, his condition may worsen, causing irreversible damage to his eye and long-term complications. With timely intervention, Miraj has an excellent chance to lead a healthy and bright future.
