Onesmus J., 14

Onesmus is a cheerful 14-year-old boy with aspirations of becoming an engineer. He enjoys drawing and creating structures with clay. He lives with his grandmother after being rejected by his father and three siblings. His grandmother, a farmer, is the sole provider for the family, earning about KSh 1,500 per month from her farm produce. They walk over 30 minutes to access drinking water from a nearby stream and reside in a three-room mud house with a pit latrine as their toilet facility. The grandmother reported that Onesmus had previously been taken to a nearby clinic, but due to financial constraints, he received unidentified injections and continued to complain of chest pain and a productive cough. Following advice from the local sub-chief, who had recently learned about Helpster Charity during a community dialogue, she brought Onesmus to Bulondo Health Centre. Helpster Charity assisted in enrolling him for free medical care. Upon assessment, the doctors noted persistent cough, chest pain, vomiting, and high fever. He was subsequently diagnosed with severe malaria and pneumonia and admitted for further management.

Onesmus was suffering from Bacteria pneumonia and severe malaria.He was given antibiotics, antimalarial drugs and rehydrating fluids.As he started feeling better, he was discharged one day after admitted from the hospital to continue his treatment in bed at home.His mother was happy and appreciated Helpster once again for helping other child to get free medical treatment from Bulondo health centre

Onesmus’s prognosis is favorable with proper medical care and continued monitoring. Since he was admitted promptly and treatment was initiated for both severe malaria and pneumonia, his condition is expected to improve steadily. With full adherence to treatment and supportive care, he is likely to make a complete recovery and regain his strength to return to school and his daily activities.
