Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness

Background

Little Rowjatul Jannat Menahin, a fragile one-month-old premature baby, was born at just 33 weeks and weighs only 1.3 kilograms, yet she shows a gentle, fighting spirit that inspires her family every day. She lives with her twin sister Seherish, her devoted mother Sweety Akter, and hardworking father Al Mamun, who earns just enough from his restaurant job to cover the family’s basic needs in their humble tin-roofed home. Recently, Rowjatul was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a serious eye condition that can cause permanent blindness without urgent Anti-VEGF injections. Her family cannot afford the treatment cost of BDT 18,000, and without intervention, Rowjatul risks losing her eyesight forever.

Medical history

Rowjatul Jannat Menahin, a 1-month-old baby girl, was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes, a serious condition that required immediate treatment to prevent potential vision loss. To control the abnormal growth of retinal blood vessels, Anti-VEGF injections were administered by Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist. The procedure was carried out carefully, and her condition was closely monitored through follow-up examinations. Rowjatul responded positively to the treatment and showed gradual improvement in her retinal health. The abnormal blood vessel growth is now under control, and her retinal condition has improved. Doctors remain hopeful that she will develop clear and healthy vision as she grows. Sincere thanks to Helpster Charity and Helpster Heroes for supporting her timely treatment and helping protect her eyesight.

Prognosis

According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Baby Rowjatul requires urgent Anti-VEGF (Avastin) injections in both eyes to stop the abnormal blood vessel growth caused by ROP. The doctors believe that if the treatment is done immediately, her vision can be fully restored or greatly improved, allowing her eyes to develop normally as she grows. However, if the treatment is delayed or not provided, the abnormal vessels may continue to grow and cause scarring and retinal detachment, leading to complete blindness for life. The doctors have assured that with timely intervention, regular follow-up visits, and proper care, Rowjatul can recover her vision and live a healthy, sighted life like other children.
