Arifa Begum has been suffering from a gap in her palate since birth, which doctors have diagnosed as an isolated incomplete cleft palate. A cleft palate is a congenital condition where the roof of the mouth does not fully develop, leaving an opening that affects normal speech, feeding, and sometimes hearing. In Arifa’s case, the condition makes it difficult for her to speak clearly and puts her at risk of further complications if not treated. With proper medical intervention, she has the chance to overcome these challenges and live a healthier, more confident life

Background
Arifa Begum is a bright and cheerful 8-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a doctor, but her journey is overshadowed by an incomplete cleft palate since birth. Her father struggles to earn a small income as a van driver, while her mother works tirelessly as a housemaid, yet their earnings barely cover rent and daily food for the four family members. Despite her condition, Arifa remains determined and hopeful, showing kindness and courage beyond her age. Without surgery, her speech difficulties may worsen, and she could face lifelong challenges in communication, nutrition, and confidence. Timely treatment can give Arifa the chance to grow up healthy and pursue the bright future she dreams of.
Medical history
Arifa was admitted to Al Manar Hospital on 26th September 2025 with a diagnosis of isolated incomplete cleft palate. She successfully underwent palatoplasty by von Langenbeck technique under general anesthesia the same day, and the surgery went smoothly without complications. She was discharged on 27th September with proper medication and post-operative advice. Arifa and her parents are deeply grateful to Helpster Charity, its volunteers, and Al Manar Hospital for making this life-changing surgery possible. Their heartfelt thanks reflect the hope and new opportunities this support has given Arifa for a healthier and brighter future.
Prognosis
The recommended treatment for Arifa’s condition is palatoplasty (surgery to repair the cleft palate) followed by regular medical follow-up and supportive care, including speech therapy if needed. Without this intervention, her incomplete cleft palate will continue to interfere with speech, making communication difficult and leading to long-term social and emotional challenges. She may also suffer from persistent feeding problems and recurring ear or hearing issues, which could affect her overall growth and development. With timely palatoplasty and proper follow-up care, her speech can improve significantly, and the risks of nutritional or hearing difficulties can be minimized. This treatment would give Arifa the opportunity to grow up healthier, more confident, and closer to achieving her dream of becoming a doctor.
