Rumi Akter, a bright and kind 13-year-old girl from a small village in Lakshmipur, is known for her sincerity, good manners, and love for learning. Her father, a construction laborer, earns only about 8,000 BDT a month to support their family of six, while her mother manages the household with endless patience despite their poverty. Recently, Rumi was diagnosed with a cataract in her right eye, causing her vision to blur and making it difficult for her to study — the very thing she loves most. The doctors have advised immediate surgery to prevent permanent loss of sight, but the cost is far beyond what her struggling family can afford. Without this treatment, Rumi risks losing her eyesight and with it, her dream of becoming a teacher who brings hope to other children like her.

The surgery was successfully performed under anesthesia by Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sk, Chief Consultant of the Hospital, ensuring a safe and smooth procedure. The surgery went well without complications, and she responded positively after the operation. Gradually, her discomfort reduced and her eye began to heal properly. Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant of Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Rumi requires immediate cataract surgery under general anesthesia, followed by intraocular lens implantation and proper post-operative care. The doctors emphasized that with timely surgery, Rumi’s eyesight can be restored completely, allowing her to return to normal life and continue her studies without difficulty. However, if her condition remains untreated, the cataract will become denser, potentially leading to permanent blindness in the affected eye and possible complications in the other. The doctors believe that early surgical intervention will have a profound impact on her future — giving her the gift of sight, learning, and independence once again.
