Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

Nodular episcleritis is an inflammatory eye condition characterized by a discrete, elevated, red nodule on the episclera, the tissue layer between the conjunctiva and the sclera. Blood vessels in the eye get bigger, making it look red or pink. It is a severe, painful form of scleritis that is often associated with underlying autoimmune or systemic diseases, and if left untreated, it can lead to vision loss.

Background

Mairin Akter, a bright and kind 12-year-old girl from a poor family in rural Doadda, dreams of becoming a nurse to care for the sick in her community. Her father, Md. Mohosin, works hard as a construction laborer earning only about 8,500 taka a month, barely enough to feed his wife Jasmin and their three children — Mairin, Salma, and little Saiful. When Mairin developed severe pain and swelling in her right eye, doctors diagnosed her with Nodular Episcleritis and warned that she needs urgent surgery costing 22,500 taka to save her vision. But with no savings, land, or assets, the family cannot afford the expense. Without timely treatment, Mairin risks losing sight in her eye, ending her dream of becoming a nurse and dimming the hope her family holds for a brighter future.

Medical history

Mairin Akter, a 12-year-old patient, was admitted to Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital on 08/10/2025 with a diagnosis of nodular episcleritis affecting her right eye. She underwent a successful excision surgery on 09/10/2025 under anesthesia, performed by a specialist ophthalmologist. Following the procedure, she received appropriate post-operative care, including eye drops and regular monitoring, which ensured a smooth recovery without complications. She was discharged on 10/10/2025 in stable condition with improved eye health and advised for follow-up. Mairin and her family expressed their sincere gratitude to Helpster Charity, its dedicated volunteers, and the hospital team for their timely support and compassionate care throughout her treatment.

Prognosis

According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Rashedur Rahman Talukder, Senior Consultant of Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Mairin’s condition is at a critical stage and requires immediate surgical intervention. The doctors have recommended surgery followed by post-operative care and regular check-ups to ensure complete recovery and prevent recurrence. They stated that with timely treatment, Mairin’s vision can be fully preserved, allowing her to lead a normal life and continue her education. However, if left untreated, the inflammation could spread and cause permanent vision loss or serious eye complications. The doctors are optimistic that the surgery will restore Mairin’s comfort, relieve her pain, and safeguard her eyesight — giving her a second chance to see the world clearly and fulfill her dreams. The estimated cost for surgery, anesthesia, medicines, and follow-up is BDT 22,500, which the family cannot manage on their own.
