Litra N., 13

Litra is a 13-year-old girl living with her aunt in a rural area. She is a Grade 5 student at a local primary school and dreams of becoming a teacher. She depends on her uncle, who is their sole provider and earns a living through farming. Litra lives with her uncle because her parents separated when she was three; her father’s whereabouts are unknown, and her mother remarried and is not supportive. The family resides in a two-room house, walks 30 minutes to access drinking water from a stream, and uses a pit latrine. Litra is known to be humble and hardworking. For the past month, Litra has been experiencing persistent, step-ladder-like headaches localized in the frontal region, along with fever, abdominal pain with rumbling, occasional mucoid diarrhea, and current vomiting. Due to financial constraints, she had not been able to access medical care. She was identified by a community health promoter, who referred her to the facility and informed her aunt about Helpster Charity, an organization that supports needy children with free medical treatment at Bulondo Health Centre. Litra was brought to the facility with hope and was successfully enrolled in the program, receiving the care she needed.

Litra was diagnosed with enteric fever and malaria, given antibiotics, antimalarial and rehydrating fluids while admitted later was stable discharged when she was stable.Litra lacked words since she never expected one could come to help her get treatment,her aunt appreciated Helpster Charity Organization for helping litra get free medical treatment at Bulondo health centre.

Litra’s prognosis is good with timely and appropriate treatment. Since she has been promptly diagnosed and started on therapy for both malaria and enteric fever, her symptoms are expected to improve steadily. With adherence to medications, adequate hydration, proper nutrition, and follow-up care, a full recovery is anticipated without long-term complications.
