When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections
Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs, making the air sacs fill with fluid or pus, which makes breathing painful and reduces oxygen intake. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi and can lead to mild to life-threatening illness, being the leading infectious cause of death in children globally. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium, which are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Once inside the body, the parasites multiply in the liver and then infect red blood cells, leading to symptoms.

Background
Precious is a 13-year-old girl with special needs attending St. Anthony Special School in Awasi. She has slurred speech and impaired vision. She is in Grade Six, and her parents, who live in Kakamega, do not have steady jobs. Precious is the firstborn of five siblings. Since she resides at the school, the house mothers provide her daily care. She was brought to the school as a young girl after being rescued by well-wishers, as her parents could not afford to enroll her. At school, she lives among other children with various disabilities. Despite her challenges, she aspires to become a teacher for children with special needs. Precious was brought to the hospital by the school manager with a two-day history of fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, chest pain that worsens when lying down, and reduced appetite. She had not received any medication prior to the visit. She has no history of blood transfusions or allergies. On examination, she showed no signs of dehydration, pallor, or cyanosis, but was clinically febrile. Crepitations were detected on the left lung, and bronchial breath sounds were noted in the cardiovascular assessment. She was diagnosed with pneumonia, and laboratory investigations also revealed malaria. Precious was admitted to the hospital and started on appropriate medication.
Medical history
Precious was diagnosed with pneumonia and malaria. She spent four days at the hospital being treated with antibiotics and anti-malarials, analgesics and intravenous fluids. Upon feeling better, she was discharged back to school/home in good general condition. The school management appreciates the care Precious received while at the hospital and the several follow ups the facility has been making. The teachers expressed their gratitude, that the child was received well by the staff. The child is now back to school and is awaiting to write her national exams. Health education on seeking immediate treatment and keeping warm was given. Precious becomes the second beneficiary of Helpster Charity at Awasi Catholic Mission Health Centre.
Prognosis
Precious’s prognosis is good. With prompt and appropriate treatment for pneumonia and malaria, she is expected to recover fully. Close monitoring, adherence to prescribed medications, adequate hydration, and rest are essential for her recovery.
