Low birth weight is defined as a baby weighing less than 2,500 grams (\(5.5\) pounds) at birth, and it can be caused by premature birth, being small for gestational age, or both. Infants with low birth weight face increased health risks, including developmental delays, infection, and respiratory issues, and often require specialized care in a neonatal intensive care unit. Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a breathing problem characterized by difficulty breathing. There are two main types: infant RDS, which occurs in premature babies due to a lack of lung surfactant, and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), a severe, rapid-onset lung failure in adults caused by widespread inflammation

Background
Baby Consolata is the first and only child of a teenage mother and a young father. The family lives together in a single-room mud-walled house. The father works as a manual laborer, often involved in mining and construction of blocks, while the mother has no formal employment. They learned about Helpster Charity during a hospital visit. The mother began feeling unwell one morning and initially thought it was minor illness. When her symptoms persisted the following day, she sought medical attention at a nearby health facility. After tests, she was informed that she was pregnant, at approximately four weeks gestation. She attended two antenatal care (ANC) clinics—one at four months and another at five months. She was scheduled for her third ANC visit at six months when she began experiencing abdominal pain. On a Sunday morning, she discovered she was bleeding. With the nearest health facility closed, she rushed to Siaya Referral Hospital for urgent care and delivered a premature baby.
Medical history
Baby Consolata was born prematurely and diagnosed with respiratory distress syndrome. She was admitted to the NBU (newbornunit). There she stayed for over 3 weeks; she was treated with IV benzylpenicillin, gentamicin, dextrose, and caffeine citrate, among other drugs. She was tolerant to the medication, and she responded well to treatment and was eventually discharged weighing 1600 grams.
Prognosis
Baby Consolata, delivered prematurely at 6 months of gestation, presents with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), a condition resulting from immature lung development and insufficient surfactant production. The prognosis is guarded to poor, given the extreme prematurity and high risk of complications such as hypoxemia, apnea, and secondary infections. With immediate and intensive neonatal care, including oxygen therapy, incubator support, and administration of surfactant where available, there is potential for gradual improvement in respiratory function. However, the risk of respiratory failure, intraventricular hemorrhage, and long-term complications such as chronic lung disease remains significant. Close monitoring, supportive management, and continuous evaluation in the Newborn Unit (NBU) are essential for the best possible outcome.
