Severe malaria is a critical condition, primarily caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, transmitted through the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. It can lead to significant morbidity and mortality if not treated promptly. Acute bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening infection of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Kausar Ali is suffering from severe malaria and acute bacterial meningitis, which caused high fever, repeated convulsions, and unconsciousness. She is in a serious condition and needs urgent medical care.

Background
Kausar Ali is a bright and playful 3-year-old girl who loves dancing, drawing, and playing with her toys. She dreams of becoming a doctor one day so she can help other sick children get well. Maryam Musa developed a high-grade fever, which was continuous in nature. At the onset of the fever, she complained of a throbbing frontal headache, followed by repeated eye rolling and drooling of saliva. The convulsions lasted for a few minutes and recurred several times, with a total of four episodes prior to presentation, which were aborted with the administration of diazepam. There was no preceding history of vomiting or diarrhea. The patient was unconscious on arrival at our facility. Upon presentation at our hospital, and after further clinical evaluation, she was found to be pale and febrile. She was diagnosed with severe malaria and acute bacterial meningitis. Her critical condition with the pallor, informed the decision to transfuse.
Medical history
Kausar Ali received prompt and comprehensive medical treatment, including antimalarial medications, antibiotics, anticonvulsant therapy, intravenous fluids, fever management, and other supportive care. She was closely monitored throughout her admission, with regular assessment of her vital signs and clinical response. The treatment successfully controlled her convulsions, reduced her fever, and improved her overall condition. She responded well to treatment and is recovering steadily under close medical supervision, with continued medications and follow-up recommended to ensure complete recovery.
Prognosis
Ali suffered from Severe malaria and acute bacterial meningitis which affected the clinical state and puts the child at risk of death. Both are critical and requires emergency care. Doctor's believe that with prompt and complete treatment, Kausar Ali has a very good chance of full recovery and will be able to return to her normal life and childhood activities. However, if left untreated, the severe malaria and the acute bacterial meningitis could lead to brain damage, long-term disability, or even death. Early and continuous medical care is therefore crucial to saving her life and preventing lasting harm.
