Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness

Background

One-month-old Mehedi Hasan is a gentle and much-loved premature baby whose young parents dream of seeing him grow up healthy and educated, despite the many hardships they face. His father, Md. Habib, is a small farmer earning around BDT 6,000 per month, while his mother Amena Akter stays home to care for Mehedi and his elderly grandmother, Maksuda Begum, leaving the family in a modest tin-roofed house with no savings. After surviving critical NICU care, Mehedi was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity in both eyes at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital. Without urgent Anti-VEGF treatment costing BDT 18,000, he risks permanent blindness that would affect his development and future independence for life. The family learned about Helpster Charity from Nazma Akter, Counselor at the hospital, and now desperately hopes for support to save their baby’s eyesight and future.

Medical history

Mehedi Hasan, a 1-month-old baby boy, was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes, a condition that posed a serious risk to her developing vision. Immediate treatment was necessary to prevent long-term damage, and he received Anti-VEGF injections administered by Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist. The procedure was carried out with great care, and his condition was closely observed through regular follow-up visits. He responded positively to the treatment, with gradual improvement seen in his retinal condition. The abnormal blood vessel growth has now been brought under control. His retinal health is improving steadily, giving hope for normal vision development. Heartfelt thanks to Helpster Charity and Helpster Heroes for their generous support in helping protect his eyesight.

Prognosis

According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, Mehedi requires immediate Anti-VEGF injections (Avastin) in both eyes, followed by routine follow-up visits to assess retinal development. The doctors are confident that if treatment is started without delay, Mehedi’s vision can be safely restored, allowing him to grow up with normal eyesight and lead a healthy, active life. However, if Mehedi does not receive the necessary injections on time, the disease may rapidly progress, causing permanent retinal damage and irreversible blindness. The specialists have emphasized that prompt intervention is the only way to protect his vision and ensure a normal visual future.
