Cord prolapse is a medical emergency where the umbilical cord slips down into the birth canal ahead of or alongside the baby during delivery. This can lead to the cord being compressed, which restricts the baby's blood and oxygen supply and requires immediate medical intervention, such as an emergency Cesarean section while Prolonged labor, also called "failure to progress," is when labor slows down and does not progress as expected, often taking more than 20 hours for first-time mothers. Causes can include issues with uterine contractions, the baby's position, or the mother's pelvis and Fetal distress is a condition where the baby is not receiving enough oxygen or is otherwise not well before or during labor, leading to signs like an abnormal heart rate.

Background
Dorcus was born into a humble family that constantly faced financial challenges. Her parents lived in a small, old house made of iron sheets and mud walls, in a low-income neighborhood where access to basic needs was often difficult. The family survived on casual labor, sometimes going without proper meals. Despite these hardships, her parents instilled in her the values of hard work, respect, and perseverance. Growing up in such conditions taught Dorcus determination and the importance of striving for a better future. She was brought to the facility in labor, accompanied by her mother, complaining of lower abdominal pain radiating to the back, which had been increasing in frequency and intensity. She also reported fluid drainage for the past four days and decreased fetal movement over the last two days. On examination, she was found to be 4 cm dilated with no progress in labor and a visible pulsating umbilical cord — a condition known as cord prolapse, which poses serious danger as it can cut off oxygen supply to the baby and lead to fetal distress or death if not managed promptly. Based on examination and laboratory findings, she was diagnosed with prolonged labor, cord prolapse, and fetal distress. The medical team promptly recommended an emergency cesarean section to save both lives.
Medical history
Dorcus came in the facility in labour accompanied by her mother with complains of lower abdominal pain which radiated to the back, increasing in frequency and intensity associated with drainage of liquid for last four days, She had been experiencing reduced fetal movement for past two days. With cervical dilated at 4cm without any progress. On examination she diagnosed with cord prolapse, fetal distress and prolonged labour. The team of doctors requested for emergency ceaserian section which was contacted successful both mother and the baby are in good condition and discharged when stable and doing well.
Prognosis
Both Dorcus and her baby should show a positive recovery following the emergency cesarean section. The procedure will successfully resolve the complications caused by the cord prolapse and fetal distress. Dorcus should regain strength and respond well to post-operative care, while the baby will hopefully be stable and show no signs of distress.
