About infections
Severe malaria is a life-threatening progression of a malaria infection, often caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, characterized by serious organ failures or metabolic abnormalities like impaired consciousness, severe anemia, acute respiratory distress, and organ damage. Treatment requires immediate, intensive care in a hospital with injectable antimalarials, with intravenous (IV) artesunate recommended as the preferred first-line treatment. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid or pus. It is caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi and leads to symptoms like cough, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing

Background
Tabitha, the youngest of five children, is a quiet and humble child. Her father has a mental disability, while her mother is a subsistence farmer. Tabitha had been unwell for two weeks, experiencing intermittent fevers—mostly at night—along with persistent vomiting that made it difficult for her to retain any feed. She was restless, agitated, and irritable. Initially, she was taken to a nearby local clinic, treated, and discharged; however, her symptoms persisted. With assistance from a community health provider, she was brought to the facility for further care. At the facility, Tabitha was thoroughly examined, laboratory investigations were conducted, and treatment was initiated promptly.
Medical history
The baby was brought in the facility with the complains of vomiting high fevers and irritability. She was admitted and has responded to the treatment well.She is being discharged from the hospital she is to continue with the oral medication. From a follow up visit report Tabitha has regained back her full health and can play and breastfeed well without any difficulty.The mother reports of no any incidence of illness since they were discharged and even after completion of the oral medication she was taking at home.Tabitha has gone back to her normal life.
Prognosis
Tabitha’s prognosis is excellent. With timely and appropriate medical intervention, she has recovered fully, is stable, feeding well, and showing no signs of ongoing illness. With continued monitoring, proper nutrition, and routine health follow-up, she is expected to maintain good health without complications.
