Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections
Severe malaria, severe anemia, severe lower respiratory tract infection Severe malaria, severe anemia, and severe lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) together create an extremely critical, life-threatening condition. Severe malaria may cause high fever, altered consciousness, shock, metabolic acidosis, and respiratory distress. Severe anemia—often from hemolysis—leads to profound weakness, tachycardia, heart failure risk, and worsened hypoxia. Severe LRTI adds cough, fast breathing, chest indrawing, hypoxia, and widespread lung inflammation. Combined, they significantly impair oxygen delivery, increase the risk of organ failure, seizures, and death. Urgent management includes IV antimalarials, oxygen therapy, blood transfusion, broad-spectrum antibiotics, fluid/electrolyte correction, and intensive monitoring to stabilize the patient.

Background
Maryam is 1year old female child. Her parents are from a remote community of Bauchi state. She is the last child among 7 siblings. Father is currently struggling with his finances in taking care of his family, mother is a petty trader trying to support in every way possible. Maryam, a one year old infant was healthy until three days ago when, suddenly she developed high grade fever which affected her feeding and disturbed her sleep at night. She developed cough with runny nose and her breathing became labored with nasal flaring and was very pale. There was intercostal subcostal indrawing with crepitations bilaterally. She also had tachycardia and tender hepatomegaly. On evaluation, she was diagnosed with severe malaria, severe anemia and lower respiratory tract infection. The family lack the finances to take her to the hospital. They come for Helpster Charity to support them.
Medical history
Maryam, a 1year old infant was healthy until three days ago when, suddenly she developed high grade fever which affected her feeding and disturbed her sleep at night. She developed cough with runny nose and her breathing became laboured. She looked very ill and weak, tachypneic, febrile [38.0 degree centigrade], with nasal flaring and very pale. She was admitted and diagnosed with severe anemia, severe malaria and lower respiratory tract infection. Treatment commenced with injection antimalarial, injection antibiotics and other supportive care as well as blood transfusion was administered. Patient did well on the 3rd of treatment, she became stable and was ready for discharge on doctor's satisfaction. She is to be returned after a week for follow up, some oral medication was given for continued treatment. The family are jolly, they remained thankful to Helpster Charity and team for the medical support.
Prognosis
The prognosis of severe malaria combined with severe anemia and severe lower respiratory tract infection is generally poor without rapid, intensive treatment. These conditions together severely compromise oxygen delivery and organ function, increasing the risk of shock, respiratory failure, cerebral involvement, and multi-organ dysfunction. Early hospital intervention—especially IV antimalarials, urgent blood transfusion, effective antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and careful fluid management—can significantly improve survival. Children and malnourished patients face higher mortality risks. With prompt, well-coordinated critical care, many patients can recover, but the course is often prolonged, and long-term follow-up may be needed to assess neurological and respiratory outcomes.
