Background
Mst. Laiju Khatun, a 24-year-old gentle and responsible young mother, lives in a small camp with her husband, young child, and in-laws. Her husband earns only 6,000 BDT a month as a laborer, barely enough to cover food and basic needs, leaving no means to afford her urgent medical care. Despite her quiet strength and loving nature, Laiju now faces a life-threatening situation — she is 35+ weeks pregnant and suffering from severe oligohydramnios. Without immediate treatment, both she and her unborn baby are at grave risk of complications during childbirth. Her family, filled with worry but limited by poverty, hopes desperately for help so Laiju can safely deliver her child and fulfill her dream of building a better future for her family.
Medical history
Laiju, who was 35 weeks and 3 days pregnant, was admitted on 28.09.2025 with complaints of lower abdominal pain, fluid discharge, and abdominal discomfort, and was diagnosed with severe oligohydramnios. Due to the critical condition, she underwent an immediate lower uterine cesarean section (LUCS) to ensure the safety of both her and her baby. The procedure was successful, and both mother and baby remained stable after surgery. With proper post-operative care and monitoring, Laiju’s condition improved steadily, and she was able to recover well. After receiving appropriate treatment and ensuring her health and the baby’s well-being, she was discharged from the hospital on 01.10.2025.
Prognosis
The doctor has recommended a Lower Uterine Cesarean Section (LUCS) under spinal anesthesia (SAB) as the safest treatment option for Laiju. This procedure is essential to prevent complications caused by severe oligohydramnios, such as fetal distress, oxygen deprivation, or even stillbirth. With timely surgical intervention, both the mother and baby have a strong chance of survival and recovery. However, if left untreated, the baby’s life would be at serious risk due to the lack of protective amniotic fluid, and Laiju could also face life-threatening complications during labor. The LUCS offers the best opportunity for a safe delivery and a hopeful future for both mother and child.
