Background
A two-month-old infant lives with a teenage mother and grandmother in the same household. Since birth, the baby has had persistent crying, which the family initially thought would resolve on its own. On 08.10.25, the infant was admitted to St. Anne’s Nyangoma Health Centre and treated for septicemia and malaria. After recovery, the child was referred to a paediatrician, who suspected a hernia. On 28.10.25, the baby was taken to Inuka Hospital for further evaluation by a general surgeon. Following a physical examination and ultrasound, the surgeon confirmed the presence of bilateral inguinal hernias and an umbilical hernia, and also confirmed that the inguinal hernia was causing the discomfort as it was swollen and tender. The infant remains irritable and continues to cry frequently, suggesting ongoing discomfort. Surgical correction has been recommended to ease the symptoms and improve the baby’s overall well-being.
Medical history
The child was referred from Nyangoma Mission Hospital, with a preliminary diagnosis of hernia. Upon examination by general surgeon and radiology report, diagnosis confirmed was Umblical hernia and bilateral inguinal hernia. The doctor recommended immediate bilateral herniorrhaphy which was completed successfully and the patient was discharged in stable condition. The umbilical hernia was not repaired since it was not symptomatic and may resolve by the age of 5yrs. Medication issued on discharge and review clinic was booked on 14/11/2025. Came for the clinic and was confirmed to be doing well
Prognosis
The prognosis is favorable with timely surgical intervention. The procedure will relieve brayden's discomfort, prevent recurrence, and promote normal growth and development. However, if left untreated, the hernias pose a significant medical risk. Potential complications include; incarnation and strangulation both of which are potentially life threatening. Given the Brayden's’s age and the bilateral involvement, Right and left inguinal herniorrhaphy is strongly recommended as soon as possible to prevent these life-threatening complications and improve the infant’s quality of life.
