Darian is the only child of a teenage mother who recently turned nineteen. He lives with his elderly grandmother in Kibisi Village after his parents’ divorce, which led to him and his five siblings being separated and cared for by different relatives. With no stable source of income, Darian’s mother relies on occasional manual work in the village—such as washing clothes, digging, or collecting firewood—to support herself and her child. Darian was referred to our facility from Naitiri Subcounty Hospital with a six-month history of mouth breathing, loud snoring, and disturbed sleep marked by episodes of paused breathing. These symptoms had gradually worsened despite previous treatments. His mother also noted poor weight gain, frequent colds, a runny nose, and recurring fevers. On examination, Darian appeared in distress and irritable, weighing 6.4 kg, with a temperature of 36.7°C. Prominent mouth breathing was noted. ENT assessment showed enlarged tonsils, and a para nasal sinuses X-ray confirmed hypertrophy of both the adenoids and tonsils. A diagnosis of severe adenotonsillitis with airway obstruction and sleep apnea was made.

Darian was referred from a sub-County hospital with a six-month history of mouth breathing, loud snoring, and disrupted sleep characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These were progressively worsening despite treatment. His mother also reported poor weight gain, along with frequent colds, runny nose, and fever. On examination he was diagnosed with Adena tonsillitis with Airway Obstruction and Sleep Apnea , the medical team recommended for surgery to be contacted. Surgery was successful, the is doing well and discharged on a good condition.

Darian’s prognosis following adenotonsillectomy will be excellent. The surgery is expected to significantly improve his breathing, sleep quality, and overall growth. With the removal of the enlarged adenoids and tonsils, he will be able to breathe comfortably through his nose, especially during sleep, which will reduce or eliminate snoring and sleep apnea episodes. Better sleep will allow his body to rest and recover properly, improving energy levels, concentration, and mood. In addition, the reduction in recurrent infections and improved oxygen intake will support healthy weight gain and normal growth. Overall, Darian is expected to experience marked improvement in his health, development, and quality of life after the surgery.
