Hauwa is a calm girl who doesn't like involving herself in rough plays due to her condition. She just started school and enjoyed going to the school. Mother is not gainfully employed and father is a petit trader in his locality who manages to support the family with the little he gets. Hauwa, presented with complaints of severe pains involving her limbs, chest and abdomen. Mother reported a history of fever, headache and vomiting prior to the onset of the painful crisis. They were worried and brought her to our facility for treatment. Upon presentation at our facility and after further evaluation , she was diagnosed with vaso occlusive crisis in a known Sickle Cell patient precipitated by malaria.

Hauwa who's a known Sickle Cell Diseased patient was admitted in our facility and managed as a case of Vaso-Occlusive Crisis precipitated by Malaria. She had her complete dosages of IV and Oral antimalarial and IV analgesics. She was also re-hydrated with IV fluids. As the treatment progressed, she responded well evidenced by resolving of her admitting symptoms. She was later discharged home with oral medications following the improvement of her condition.

Patients with sickle cell disease are best treated by prevention of stressfully conditions to avoid crisis. However, when in crisis patients are managed based on the type of crisis they present with and they usually respond well to the treatment. With proper prevention and management of active crisis, patients with sickle cell disease can live a normal life up to adulthood.
