Background
Adamu is a calm child who likes to be with his mother always. His mother is unemployed. Father is a small scale farmer who struggles to care for the family. Due to the recurrent crisis the patient suffers, the little the family gets is being spent on him. Adamu presented with severe abdominal and chest pains, shortness of breath, fever, vomiting and refusal to feed. Laboratory test confirmed a decline in his PCV. Upon presentation at our hospital, and after further evaluation , he was diagnosed with mixed (Anemic and Vaso Occlusive) Crisis in a known Sickle Cell Disease precipitated by Malaria.
Medical history
Adamu who's a known Sickle Cell Diseased patient was admitted in our facility and managed as a case of Mixed (Anemic and Vaso-Occlusive) Crisis precipitated by Malaria. He had his complete dosages of IV and Oral antimalarial, IV analgesics and blood transfusion. He was also re-hydrated with IV fluids and given oxygen support. As the treatment progressed, he responded well as evidenced by resolving of admitting symptoms. He was later discharged home with oral medications following the improvement of his condition.
Prognosis
Crisis from sickle cell disease patients is an emergency and hence requires urgent intervention and once appropriate and timely intervention are instituted, patients usually respond very well. With prevention of diseases and prompt and appropriate management of various diseases in sickle cell patients, they can live a normal life with minimal crisis and complications from the sickle cell disease.
