Malaria is a disease condition caused by the parasite Plasmodium spp and transmitted by the vector female anopheles mosquito. It is a disease usually seen in the tropical areas. It usually presents with symptoms of fever, headache, body pains, vomiting etc. In some instances it presents as a severe disease where it causes various forms of life threatening systemic conditions. Malaria has a similar presentation with Enteric fever which is an infection caused by the bacteria Slamonella spp.

Background
Abubakar is a young boy who started school recently and enjoys attending the school. He, together with his siblings lives with his mother who is divorced his father and now lives as a single mother. The mother is not gainfully employed She does little works she gets to support the family. Abubakar presented with a 5-day history of fever and abdominal pain, accompanied by body weakness and vomiting for 2 days. Upon presentation at our hospital, and after further evaluation, he was diagnosed with Severe Malaria (Prostration) and Enteric Fever.
Medical history
Abubakar was admitted in our facility where he was managed as a case of Severe Malaria (Prostration) R/O Enteric Fever. He had his complete dosages of IV and Oral antimalarial, IV analgesics and IV Antibiotics. He was also re-hydrated with IV fluids. As the treatment progressed, he responded well as evidenced by resolving of admitting symptoms. He was later discharged home with oral medications following the improvement of his condition.
Prognosis
Usman is suffering from severe malaria and enteric fever, this conditions can worsen the life outcome if not treated early and causes complications such as anemia or cerebral malaria. Severe Malaria in all forms is treated with parenteral antimalarial and other supportive interventions as the case may be. With appropriate and timely treatment using parenteral antimalarials and other supportive interventions, the child has a good chance of recovery. However, any delay in treatment may worsen the condition and could lead to detrimental outcomes.
