Leila is a one-year-old girl and the only child in her family. She lives with both parents, and her cousins occasionally stay with them during school holidays. Her mother is unemployed, so the father, who works as a casual laborer, is the sole provider and depends on irregular job opportunities to support the family. On Sunday, Leila’s mother noticed that she was vomiting, had no appetite, and felt very hot. She quickly took her to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. After testing was done, Leila was admitted to the ward for further management after a diagnosis of severe malaria was made. while she was in the wards, a a volunteer visited their home to ascertain the living conditions of the home, and confirmed that indeed Leila comes from an underprivileged background.

Upon admission, Leila was started on IV Artesunate 34 mg, IV Hydrocortisone, oral Promethazine, oral Paracetamol, Artemether-Lumefantrine (AL), and Calamine lotion to be applied twice daily. She showed noticeable improvement by the third day while continuing to receive medications as prescribed. On the fourth day, she was clinically fair and stable, and by the fifth day she woke up feeling healthy, stable, and had made a full recovery. She was subsequently discharged home on oral medication to complete the treatment course. A follow-up phone call later confirmed that she is well.

Malaria prognosis varies from excellent to fatal, depending on the parasite species, promptness of treatment, and the patient's age and immunity. Uncomplicated malaria is typically curable with a full recovery, while severe cases, especially those caused by P. falciparum, can lead to death if not treated quickly and intravenously. Prognosis is poorer for young children, non-immune populations, and those with severe complications like coma, severe anemia, or organ failure. The prognosis for a skin rash depends on its cause, with some clearing up quickly and others being chronic. Mild rashes often resolve on their own or with simple treatment, while severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening without immediate care. Chronic conditions like eczema require ongoing management, and viral rashes may last for weeks depending on the infection.
