Faith is the firstborn in a family of three children and lives with her mother and siblings at their grandmother’s homestead. Her parents are divorced, leaving her mother to raise the children on her own. To provide for the family, Faith’s mother earns a living by selling vegetables at the local market. Faith is a warm, joyful, and loving child who enjoys playing netball and dancing, and she dreams of becoming a doctor in the future. Faith had been unwell for three days prior to being brought to the hospital, complaining of vomiting, headaches, joint pains, and intermittent fever. Her mother initially administered paracetamol, which offered only temporary relief, as the symptoms repeatedly returned. One day, a neighbor visited the family and found Faith in a visibly distressing condition - weak, vomiting frequently, and struggling to move herself whenever she needed to vomit. Deeply concerned, the neighbor listened as Faith’s mother explained that she had tried managing the illness with over-the-counter medication, mainly paracetamol, without improvement. Being familiar with Helpster Charity, the neighbor advised her to take Faith to the health facility for proper evaluation. Faith also reported episodes of difficulty breathing and wheezing alongside the persistent vomiting, further heightening concern and prompting the hospital visit.

Following clinical evaluation and investigations, Faith was diagnosed with severe malaria complicated by status asthmaticus. This presentation was recognized as serious and potentially life-threatening, requiring immediate and intensive management. Faith responded well to the management provided, which included antimalarials and other medications as per medical guidance. Her condition gradually improved under hospital care. She was closely monitored, and once stabilized, she was discharged home on oral medications with instructions for continued follow-up and observation for any recurrence of symptoms. With timely treatment and her positive response to therapy, Faith improved and was discharged in a stable condition. A follow up phone call to her mother 5 days after discharge confirmed that she was doing well.

Faith's diagnosis is favourable. Faith was diagnosed with severe malaria complicated by status asthmaticus, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition requiring urgent medical management. Despite the severity of her presentation, the establishment of an accurate diagnosis and the prompt initiation of appropriate treatment significantly improve her outlook. With effective antimalarial therapy, aggressive management of the acute asthma exacerbation, close monitoring, and adherence to follow-up care, Faith’s condition is expected to stabilize and improve.
