Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About emergency care

A snake bite is an injury resulting from a snake's fangs penetrating the skin, which can be a serious medical emergency if the snake is venomous. Venomous bites can inject toxins that cause a range of systemic effects, including tissue death, bleeding problems, nerve damage, or even death.

Background

Mercy is the third-born in a family of five children. She has a mental disability, which led to her mother never enrolling her in school. When her mother relocated to Turkana, Mercy remained behind and now lives under the care of her aunt. Despite her challenges, Mercy is a cheerful, shy, yet friendly girl who enjoys watching television. One day, Mercy left home to fetch water from a nearby stream. A passerby heard her screaming and found her saying she had been bitten by a brown snake, which had already escaped. In fear, she attempted to cut the bite area using a sharp stick, causing the wound to bleed. She was rushed to the hospital, where an assessment confirmed a snake bite.

Medical history

Mercy came with complains of snake bite. She was attended to urgently and anti serum was administered with anti histamine and antiinflamatory and antibiotics. She responded to them positively and was discharged with a good prognosis while she could walk well and she was happy. She has joined her family back at home and has resumed her normal duties.

Prognosis

Snake bite is an emergency condition especially if the bite is from a venomous snake as in Mercy's case, who came in with history of snake bite. Mercy's prognosis showed positive result on the second day after treatment with antivenom, injectable hydrocortisone and anti inflammatory drugs to counteract the oedema. Mercy showed improvement upon discharge and is scheduled for a follow up to confirm her full recovery and good prognosis.
