Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness

Background

One-month-old Jubayer Hossain, a gentle premature twin, brings light to his family’s humble home in Lakshmipur, where he lives with his twin sister Jannat, elder sister Jobaida, and their caring parents. His father, Md. Jabed, earns only about BDT 8,000 per month as a mason, which barely covers food and basic needs, leaving the family unable to afford the urgent treatment required for the twins’ Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Though Jubayer softly responds to his parents’ voices and fills their hearts with hope, doctors have warned that without immediate treatment, both he and Jannat risk permanent blindness. The family learned about Helpster Charity from Nasima Akhter, Counselor of the Pediatric Unit at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, who guided them to seek support. Now, with no savings and no other options, the parents pray that generous donors will help save their babies’ eyesight and secure their future.

Medical history

Jubayer Hossain, a 1-month-old baby boy, was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes, a condition that can seriously affect vision if not treated promptly. To manage the abnormal growth of retinal blood vessels, Anti-VEGF injections were administered on 20.11.2025 by Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, the hospital’s ROP Specialist. The treatment was carried out with great care, and he was closely monitored during follow-up visits. He responded well to the injections, showing steady improvement in his retinal condition. The abnormal blood vessel growth is now under control, and his retina is gradually stabilizing. Doctors remain hopeful that he will develop clear vision as he grows. Sincere thanks to Helpster Charity and Helpster Heroes for their generous support in helping safeguard his eyesight.

Prognosis

According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh, Chief Consultant, and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, ROP Specialist at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, the twins urgently need Anti-VEGF injections (such as Avastin) in both eyes, along with routine follow-up examinations to ensure proper retinal development. Doctors state that timely treatment offers a strong chance to preserve their vision and allow them to grow normally. However, any delay may result in irreversible blindness. The total treatment and follow-up cost is BDT 18,000, which is beyond the family’s financial ability to manage.
