Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease which is transmitted by the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes. Human malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, fatigue, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases, it can cause jaundice, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin 10 to 15 days after being bitten by an infected Anopheles mosquito. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. Sadiya Dahiru is a 10-year-old girl who presented with a 4-day history of high-grade fever with chills, weakness, headache, vomiting, and fatigue. Examination showed fever, lethargy, and enlargement of the liver and spleen. Laboratory tests confirmed Plasmodium falciparum infection with mild anemia. These findings are consistent with severe malaria, for which she was admitted and treated.

Background
Sadiya is a typical 10-year-old girl who is likely curious, energetic, and imaginative, enjoys hobbies like playing, reading, or drawing, and has dreams and aspirations for the future. Sadiya developed a sudden high-grade fever with chills, weakness, headache, nausea, and vomiting 4 days ago. Presented in the hospital with sudden onset of high-grade fever, chills and rigors. On examination: Generally ill looking, febrile and lethargic. There is also mild enlargement of the liver and spleen on abdominal examination. Rapid malaria test confirms the presence of plasmodium falciparum. Diagnosis: Severe Malaria.
Medical history
As of 09/12/2025, Sadiya was hospitalized and is receiving comprehensive treatment for severe malaria, including antimalarial medications, intravenous fluids, and other supportive care. She is being closely monitored by the medical team, and her condition is improving steadily. With continued treatment and careful observation, she is expected to make a full recovery while minimizing the risk of complications. Prognosis
Sadiya is suffering from severe malaria which is critical and associated with anemia and complications. She's currently receiving antimalarial medication, intravenous fluids, and close monitoring to manage her life-threatening condition and support her recovery. With early and proper treatment, the prognosis is good, and we believe the child will recover fully and live a normal life. If left untreated, severe malaria can rapidly cause serious complications and may lead to death.
