Merlin M., 7

Merlin Mwangi is a 7-year-old boy who lives with his single mother and siblings in one of the informal settlement in Nairobi. He is a lively, ambitious child who dreams of becoming a pilot one day and enjoys playing and watching football in his free time. Although his mother works tirelessly at a hotel, she earns less than Ksh 200 per day, making it difficult to meet the family’s basic needs. Their financial hardship and living conditions place Merlin in a vulnerable position and underscore the need for support to safeguard his health and future. Merlin was born with undescended testicles and an inguinal hernia and has recently been experiencing worsening pain and discomfort. His mother initially sought medical care at a county referral hospital, where surgery was advised. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented her from proceeding with the treatment, forcing them to return home without care. Upon learning about Helpster Charity and the Barika Medical Centre medical camp, she brought Merlin for further evaluation. At the camp, healthcare providers assessed him and recommended a specialist review. He was later scheduled for a clinic visit, where ultrasound imaging confirmed the diagnosis of undescended testicles and a cough reflex confirmed the inguinal hernia.

Merlin Mwangi was diagnosed with bilateral cryptorchidism. The treatment was successful, and he underwent a bilateral orchidopexy procedure. He was closely monitored and cared for in the ward until he recovered fully and was ready for discharge. The child is now in good condition, feels much better, and is able to play freely with other children without fear. His mother is deeply grateful that her son finally received the treatment he needed, and she extends her heartfelt appreciation to the Helpster organization for their continued efforts in saving lives.

Merlin’s prognosis is good following the diagnosis of undescended testis and inguinal hernia, especially now that he has been appropriately assessed and scheduled for surgery. Surgical correction (orchidopexy for the undescended testis and hernia repair) is a routine and well-established procedure in children, with a high success rate. Timely surgery significantly reduces the risk of future complications, including testicular damage, infertility, testicular torsion, incarceration of the hernia, and malignancy later in life. Correcting the inguinal hernia also prevents bowel obstruction and other emergency situations.
