Peptic ulcer disease is a condition in which painful sores or ulcers develop in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It occurs when the protective lining is damaged by stomach acid, often due to Helicobacter pylori infection, long-term use of NSAIDs, or excessive stomach acid production. Severe dehydration in peptic ulcer disease can occur when persistent vomiting, poor feeding, or reduced fluid intake prevents the body from replacing lost fluids. Over time, this leads to a critical loss of water and essential electrolytes. Symptoms may include extreme weakness, sunken eyes, dry mouth, reduced urine output, dizziness, and, in severe cases, confusion or shock.

Background
Antony is an 18-year-old boy living with his grandmother in a rural area. His grandmother is a small-scale farmer who relies partly on support from other relatives to make ends meet. They live in a simple two-room house and have limited access to basic services, including clean water, which requires a 20-minute walk to fetch. Their living conditions reflect financial hardship and vulnerability to health and nutrition challenges. Antony began experiencing recurrent upper abdominal pain, especially when hungry, accompanied by heartburn, nausea, and occasional vomiting. The symptoms gradually intensified, affecting his appetite and daily functioning, and were consistent with peptic ulcer disease. Because of financial constraints, his grandmother was unable to afford hospital care, and Antony went without treatment as his condition worsened. A well-wisher who had previously been supported by Helpster Charity Organization found Antony extremely ill and writhing in pain. Recognizing the severity of his condition, the well-wisher advised the family to take him to Bulondo Health Centre, a facility partnered with Helpster Charity to support vulnerable patients. At Bulondo Health Centre, Antony was examined and diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease. On arrival, he was found to be in significant distress - vomiting repeatedly and showing clear signs of dehydration due to prolonged illness and poor oral intake.
Medical history
Anthony was diagnosed with peptic ulcers and struggled with painful symptoms. With the support of Helpster, he accessed free medical treatment that included proper diagnosis, medication (acid-reducing drugs and antibiotics), and lifestyle guidance. As a result, his ulcers healed, his pain subsided, and he regained good health without financial burden.
Prognosis
With proper medical treatment, including ulcer medications, possible treatment for H. pylori, and adherence to dietary and lifestyle advice, Antony’s peptic ulcers are expected to heal completely. His abdominal pain will resolve, appetite will improve, and he will regain strength and normal daily functioning. He will be able to attend school or work without limitation, maintain good nutrition, and have a good long-term quality of life. With follow-up care, the risk of recurrence and complications will be low.
