Solomon O., 17

Solomon is a 17-year-old boy whose life changed completely after his mother passed away. She had been his only caregiver and source of support. Following her death, his father left and has never returned, leaving Solomon with no knowledge of his whereabouts or whether he is still alive. Since then, Solomon has been living entirely on his own, without an adult to look after him. He survives in extreme poverty, with no stable income or family support until recently when his uncle took him. He is now living with his uncle and 4 cousins. Many days he depends on the kindness of neighbours or passersby for food, and at times he goes to sleep hungry because the uncle is also struggling to make ends meet. Despite these overwhelming challenges, Solomon continues to attend school, demonstrating remarkable determination to continue his education. Solomon is quiet, humble, and resilient, showing maturity far beyond his years. Although he carries deep emotional pain from loss and abandonment, he seldom complains and remains patient and respectful. He finds comfort in reading his schoolbooks and occasionally playing football with his peers. His greatest hope is to finish school, secure a stable job, and build a life filled with dignity, stability, and peace - one where he can support himself and help others facing hardship. Solomon arrived at the hospital appearing extremely weak and unwell. He explained that he had not eaten for two days due to lack of food. Out of desperation, he asked a neighbour for something to eat and was given leftovers. Shortly after eating, he developed intense stomach pain. At the hospital, he was examined and diagnosed with amoebic dysentery. Given his poor condition and vulnerable situation, the hospital in-charge referred him to Helpster Charity for medical assistance and further support.

Solomon was treated with appropriate anti-amoebic medication to eliminate the Entamoeba histolytica infection, along with supportive care such as oral rehydration to manage dehydration and electrolyte loss. He was advised to rest, maintain good nutrition, and follow proper hygiene to prevent reinfection. With timely treatment, his symptoms—bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weakness—gradually resolved. The outcome was positive, with full recovery and no complications, provided medications were completed as prescribed and follow-up care was observed.

With prompt treatment, Solomon’s prognosis is good. Amoebic dysentery responds well to the correct anti-amoebic medications, rehydration, and nutritional support. Once treatment begins, symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and weakness usually improve within a few days. Because Solomon was severely weakened from lack of food, nutritional rehabilitation is essential. As he regains strength, starts eating well, and stays hydrated, he is expected to make a full recovery.
