Jacob is a two-year-and-four-month-old boy who lives with his elderly grandmother. At a very young age, he has already endured significant loss - his mother passed away, and soon after, his father left and has not returned or provided any support. With no parental care, Jacob was taken in by his grandmother, who, due to her advanced age, limited strength, and lack of income, struggles to meet his daily needs. Jacob and his grandmother live in extremely poor conditions. Although the grandmother does her best to provide food, shelter, and safety, access to proper nutrition, healthcare, and early childhood stimulation remains very limited. Jacob was brought to the hospital by his grandmother in a very sick condition. She reported that he had been unwell at home with fever, and she gave him Panadol in an attempt to reduce the fever. However, his condition continued to deteriorate. On arrival at the hospital, Jacob was found to be critically ill. He was extremely weak and lethargic, unable to feed, severely dehydrated, and visibly distressed. His eyes appeared sunken, his mouth was dry, his skin showed poor elasticity, and he had markedly reduced urine output - clear signs of very severe dehydration. He was also having diarrhoea and vomiting and was very hot to the touch, indicating ongoing high fever. Medical evaluation and laboratory investigations confirmed a diagnosis of severe malaria complicated by very severe dehydration. The malaria infection had progressed unchecked, as Panadol only relieves fever and pain but does not treat malaria, leading to worsening illness and dehydration. Given the severity of Jacob’s condition and the family’s financial hardship, the hospital in-charge referred the grandmother to Helpster Charity Organization for assistance with his medical care. Jacob is currently admitted and receiving treatment for severe malaria and dehydration under close medical supervision.

Jacob, aged 2 years and 4 months, was treated for malaria and dehydration with prompt antimalarial medication and intravenous fluids. He responded well to treatment, became rehydrated, his fever resolved, and he recovered in stable condition without complications.

Jacob’s condition was critical on admission, but with timely and appropriate hospital care, his prognosis is now guarded but hopeful. Severe malaria complicated by very severe dehydration is life-threatening in young children, especially when treatment is delayed. However, once aggressive treatment is initiated - including antimalarial therapy, intravenous fluids, correction of electrolyte imbalance, and close monitoring - many children show significant improvement.
