Stephen M., 11

Stephen is an 11-year-old boy, the firstborn in a family of five children, living with both parents and his four younger siblings. He is currently in Grade 6 at a local primary school. From a young age, Stephen has carried heavy responsibilities within his family. His father is blind and unable to work, leaving his mother as the sole provider. She earns a living by hawking vegetables within the community, making approximately 500 shillings per month—an amount that is insufficient to meet the family’s basic needs. As a result, the household lives in extreme poverty, with food insecurity being a constant challenge. Some days the family manages only one meal, while on other days they go without food entirely. Because of these hardships, Stephen sometimes misses school to help his mother sell vegetables in order to support the family. This has disrupted his education and placed emotional strain on him, yet he continues to persevere despite the difficult circumstances. His childhood and schooling remain at constant risk as he struggles to balance survival with learning. Stephen is responsible, caring, and hardworking. He shows compassion toward his blind father and actively supports his mother while caring for his younger siblings. In his limited free time, he enjoys playing simple games with neighborhood children and participating in school activities whenever he is able to attend. Despite his challenging living conditions, Stephen dreams of continuing his education and becoming successful so that he can support his family. He hopes for a future where his siblings can attend school consistently and his parents no longer have to struggle to meet daily needs. Stephen was brought to the hospital by his mother after developing severe difficulty in breathing, persistent cough, and general weakness. His illness began gradually with flu-like symptoms, including fever and cough. Due to financial constraints, he was initially taken to a local clinic where he received injectable treatment of unknown medication. Unfortunately, his condition did not improve and instead worsened over time. As his breathing difficulties became more severe, his mother sought further care at the hospital. After thorough examination and investigations, Stephen was diagnosed with pneumonia, a serious lung infection requiring proper medical treatment and close monitoring. Given the family’s financial hardship, Stephen’s mother sought assistance from Helpster Charity Organization after being guided by one of its founders. With this support, Stephen was able to receive the necessary medical care at the hospital.

Stephen was admitted to Bulondo Health Centre with severe pneumonia, presenting with high fever, difficulty in breathing, and general weakness. With the support of Helpster Charity, he was enrolled and received free medical treatment, including thorough medical assessment, antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and supportive care such as fluids and close monitoring. The healthcare team carefully followed his progress, ensuring his breathing stabilized and infection was controlled. After several days of treatment, Stephen showed significant improvement, with reduced fever, easier breathing, and regained strength. He responded well to the medication and was eventually discharged in a stable condition. The timely intervention and support from Helpster Charity enabled Stephen to recover fully without the burden of medical costs and now his family show appreciation and happiness during follow up call by volunteer.

With treatment of pneumonia,Stephen is expected to make a full recovery and continue a normal, healthy childhood. If pneumonia is not properly treated, it can lead to complications such as breathing failure, spread of infection to other parts of the body, or prolonged weakness and poor growth.
