Davina A., 17

Davina is the firstborn in a family of two children and is a total orphan. She currently lives with her aunt, a widow who earns a living by selling vegetables. Davina’s mother was attacked by a crocodile in the lake and disappeared, and some time later her father passed away, leaving Davina and her younger sibling to be cared for by relatives. Davina dropped out of school last year because her aunt could not afford school fees, and she later became pregnant, delivering through a caesarean section in August 2025. Davina had been in good health until 29th December, when she began vomiting everything she ate, accompanied by chills, headache, and several episodes of watery diarrhoea and abdominal pain. She did not take any medication, hoping the symptoms would resolve on their own - and also because she did not have any money to buy even over-the-counter medicine as her condition worsened by the 31st. She remembered hearing about Helpster Charity during her previous hospital visit a few months earlier and came back to the facility seeking treatment, even though she had no funds. She was assessed and and diagnosed with malaria, gastroenteritis and severe dehydration.

Davina came to the facility febrile sicklooking and week.Propmt assesment was done with laboratory investigations,she was diagnosed with severe malaria and acute gastroenteritis.Davina was commenced on iv antimalarials and rehydratiin therapy and iv flagyl,on day three after admission she had shown good prognosis and the aunt requested for a discharge though she was discharged aday later,Divina has been taken to Suba in Migori county to stay with the uncke who has agreed to take her back tk school.She is to report back to school on 12/1/2026.

Gastroenteritis and malaria can be fatal if not treated with urgency since they can cause acute organ failure leading to coma then death. Davina was attended to immediately she arrived at the facility she is still on medication and there is hope of a good improvement and fair prognosis.
