Aliyu Y., 16

Aliyu is a 16yo male child, he is the 4th child among 8 children, The father is a laborer, the mother a house wife. They are struggling to carter for the family. They live in a three rooms apartment with a pit toilet, they make use of water from the well for their daily activities, no access to electricity. Patient is a 16yo male child who presented with complaints of fever for five days, yellowish discoloration of saliva, yellowish urine, severe acute pain on the right thigh including hip and knee joint, left hand pain, vomiting, hand swelling and facial swelling. On examination, patient is ill looking and in pains, febrile with temperature 37.8 degree Celsius, jaundiced, not cyanosed and pale. The family reached out to a volunteer to seek for assistance from Helpster Charity as they do not have the money to pay for their medication. They came to Albishir hospital, after thorough evaluation, he was diagnosed with bone crisis in sickle cell disease requiring urgent medical intervention.

Treatment commenced on admission to stabilize the patient and relieve from pain; analgesics were administered as well as intravenous fluids was transfused and other supportive care. Patient did well, he responded to treatment and was in a stable state. He was discharged after three days of admission The family extend gratitude to Helpster Charity for the medical support. Patient is to return for follow up after a period of 1 week.

For Aliyu a 16-year-old boy with sickle cell disease having a bone crisis, he is pale, febrile, in severe pains across multiple bones in his body and it is affecting his overall wellbeing. Prognosis can improve if treated early, with proper pain control, fluids, antibiotics, and monitoring the bone crises will improve within a few days. He is expected to recover fully from this episode. He is responding well to medications. However, repeated crises can cause long-term problems like chronic pain or bone damage. Regular follow-up, taking medicines such as hydroxyurea, staying well hydrated, and preventing infections can greatly reduce future attacks and help him live a more normal, active life.
