Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About emergency care

A head injury is any damage to the scalp, skull, or brain caused by trauma such as a fall or road accident. It can range from mild concussion to severe brain injury and may affect consciousness, memory, and normal brain function. A soft tissue injury refers to damage to muscles, skin, ligaments, tendons, or fat tissue. It includes bruises, cuts, swelling, and tears caused by trauma. A joint dislocation occurs when the bones that meet at a joint are forced out of their normal position, often causing severe pain, swelling, and inability to move the affected limb.

Background

Faith comes from an extremely disadvantaged socio-economic background. Her family depends on unstable and irregular sources of income, mainly casual labour and small subsistence activities that are insufficient to meet daily needs. Due to persistent financial hardship, the family struggles to afford basic necessities such as adequate food, clean water, decent housing, and clothing. Access to healthcare is severely limited because they cannot afford medical fees, medications, or transport to health facilities. Education is also affected, as school fees, uniforms, and learning materials are often unaffordable. The family lives in an underdeveloped area with poor infrastructure and sanitation, further exposing Faith to health risks and limiting opportunities for social and economic advancement. Overall, chronic poverty has significantly affected Faith’s well-being and future prospects. Faith was rushed to the facility while she was unconscious, by unknown individuals on a motorcycle. They reported that she had been involved in a road traffic accident involving a motorcycle while on her way home from an unknown location. Her mother was contacted and arrived at the hospital approximately five hours later. On arrival, Faith had sustained multiple serious injuries, including a severe head injury with a deep cut wound exposing the skull and heavy bleeding. She also had bruises on both palms, bruised knees, swelling of the lower limbs, and joint dislocation. Based on clinical examination, X-ray, and CT scan findings, she was diagnosed with head injury and multiple soft tissue injuries secondary to a road traffic accident. By the time her mother arrived at the hospital, Faith had been stabilised and had regained consciousness. Overwhelmed by the situation and worried about the cost of treatment, her mother expressed concern about her inability to afford hospital bills and even requested that Faith be discharged to continue treatment at home. She did not even have the money to pay for the services that Faith had been already offered. The hospital social worker was informed and conducted a thorough socio-economic assessment. The case was then escalated to the Helpster Charity volunteer, who consulted with the Helpster Charity Country Manager. After a joint review, the team agreed that Faith’s case met the criteria of extreme vulnerability and that she would significantly benefit from support from Helpster Charity.

Medical history

Faith was brought in the facility unconsciously by unknown motorcycle riders. They reported that Faith was involved in a road traffic accident while going home from unknown place. Faith sustained severe head injury with multiple soft tissue injuries, deep cut wound with skull exposed, heavy bleeding, both left and right hand and knees bruises. Based on examination, x-ray and C.T scan, she was diagnosed with severe head injury with multiple soft tissue injuries 2nd to Road traffic accident. Was admitted and treatment was initiated immediately, with some time she responded positively and discharged on a stable condition.

Prognosis

Faith’s recovery is expected to be good but gradual and carefully monitored. Having already responded to initial emergency treatment and regained consciousness, she has shown encouraging signs of stability. As her injuries continue to heal, the bleeding and swelling are expected to reduce, and her strength and mobility will slowly return.
