Axel is a one-year-and-four-month-old boy diagnosed with a reducible umbilical hernia. He is the second-born in a family of two and lives with his mother in the Kibera informal settlement. He is a cheerful and playful child, and his mother dreams that he will one day receive a good education and become a doctor. She works as a house help to provide for the family. Axel was delivered at home. During early infancy, he did not receive adequate nutrition due to insufficient breast milk and challenging socio-economic circumstances, which led to poor feeding practices. Consequently, he developed chronic malnutrition characterized by poor weight gain, delayed growth and developmental milestones, and recurrent infections due to lowered immunity. Since birth, he has also had an umbilical hernia, presenting as a persistent abdominal swelling that becomes more prominent when he cries. Axel requires financial support for: Surgical repair of the reducible umbilical hernia, laboratory investigations and medical evaluation, Hospital admission and theatre charges, Post-operative medications and follow-up care, Nutritional rehabilitation support, including therapeutic feeds and supplements to address chronic malnutrition. Axel’s mother learned about Helpster Charity during a community medical camp conducted in the area, where beneficiaries shared information about the organization’s support for vulnerable children requiring medical assistance. Through this outreach, she was advised to seek support for her son’s surgical and nutritional needs.

Axel Lael Muchugu was diagnosed with reducible umbilical hernia. After surgery, the child was monitored in the ward and given appropriate medications, including antibiotics and pain management, to support healing and prevent infection. Over the following days, the child showed steady improvement becoming more active, regaining appetite, and experiencing relief from the previous discomfort. By the time of discharge, the child was in stable condition and recovering well. Follow-up visits were scheduled to ensure proper healing and continued progress. With the successful treatment, the child is expected to return to normal activities and live a healthy, active life. The mother expressed deep gratitude for the care and support received during this period, hopeful for her child’s full recovery.
