Godwin O., 1

Godwin is the last-born child in his family. He lives with his parents and four siblings in a one-room semi-permanent house. Both his parents are casual labourers and occasionally work as unskilled workers in the local gold mines. His mother describes him as a playful and energetic child when he is well. According to his mother, she first noticed that Godwin’s body was unusually hot and gave him paracetamol. The following day, the fever persisted, and Godwin began to eat poorly, which was unusual for him. On the third day, while his mother had gone to visit her niece in search of possible work opportunities, she received an urgent call from her husband. He had been alerted by their elder child that Godwin was extremely weak, very pale, and experiencing persistent vomiting. Alarmed by his worsening condition, the father rushed Godwin to the hospital, with the mother joining them shortly afterwards. After Godwin’s was at least able to lift his head up at the hospital and the vomiting had subsided though he was still in intravenous fluids and medication, his parents begun getting worried about the hospital bill. Godwin’s father approached the social workers’ office to inquire about the possibility of waiving the medical fees, explaining that the family had no social health insurance and was unable to afford the cost of treatment. It was at this point that they were informed about the support provided by Helpster Charity for vulnerable families.

Godwin was brought to the hospital, with hotness of the body, very weak and pale. He was diagnosed with severe anemia, acute gastroenteritis, and septicemia. This warranted admission. While admitted he said as transfused blood, administered IV Artesunate, esomeprazole, pcm and ORS for every occasion he passed loose stool. He responded well to treatment and he was eventually discharged on orals. A visit to his home revealed that he had recovered fully and was back to his normal life

The prognosis for a one-year-old child like Godwin diagnosed with severe anemia, septicemia (sepsis), and acute gastroenteritis is critical and requires immediate, intensive medical intervention. Individually, each condition is serious; together, they create a high-risk scenario due to the combined impact on the body’s circulatory and immune systems. Godwin was brought to hospital in time and continues to improve. His prognosis is good.
