Ronney O., 12

Ronny is a twelve-year-old boy in Grade Four and the fourth-born in a family of five children. He comes from a disadvantaged background where his mother is the sole breadwinner, earning a living through casual farm work to support the family, while his father is unemployed with no stable income. Ronny is a cheerful and friendly boy who enjoys spending time with his friends. He loves playing football, which is his favourite sport, and dreams of becoming an engineer in the future. Ronny had been in good health until three days prior to presentation, when he suddenly developed a painful sore throat, mild cough, headache, runny nose, and difficulty swallowing. His mother initially tried local herbal remedies, but his condition continued to worsen. Eventually, Ronny could barely eat or drink due to the severe throat pain, which greatly worried his mother. The family learned about Helpster Charity through a community health volunteer who had previously interacted with the organisation during community outreach activities. The volunteer informed Ronny’s mother that Helpster Charity supports vulnerable children who are unable to afford medical care and advised her to take Ronny to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Encouraged by this information, she brought Ronny to the health facility for medical attention under the support of Helpster Charity.

Ronney who has been suffering from pharyngitis overtime, was admitted into the ward and spent three days being managed on benzyl penicillin and gentamicin injections. He showed much improvement and was discharged when he was able to take semi solid food like porridge and mashed potatoes. He looked really well on discharge

On clinical assessment, Ronny was diagnosed with acute pharyngitis, an inflammatory condition of the throat that is commonly caused by viral or bacterial infections. The symptoms he exhibited, particularly the severe throat pain and difficulty swallowing, indicated significant inflammation of the pharyngeal tissues Ronny’s prognosis is good. Acute pharyngitis generally responds well to appropriate treatment, rest, and adequate hydration. With adherence to the prescribed medication and supportive care, his symptoms are expected to gradually improve over the next few days. It is anticipated that Ronny will regain his ability to eat and drink normally as the throat inflammation subsides.
