Angel is a one-year-old girl and the firstborn child in her family. She lives with her mother, who is the sole breadwinner. Her mother runs a small-scale business that earns approximately KES 2,000 per month, which she uses to support the household. The family lives in a single rented room, shares a pit latrine with other households, and fetches drinking water from a borehole. Due to their limited income and challenging living conditions, the family often struggles to meet basic needs, including accessing timely medical care when Angel falls ill. Angel began to show symptoms of illness, including high fever, coughing, and wheezing. As her condition progressed, she developed poor appetite, became weak, and increasingly struggled to breathe. The persistent wheezing and difficulty in breathing greatly alarmed her mother. When her mother brought Angel to the hospital, she was unable to afford even the consultation fee. A registration clerk noticed that the child was in respiratory distress and that the family could not pay for services. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the clerk referred Angel to the emergency room for immediate medical attention and alerted the social worker. After conducting a social assessment, after the child had been stabilized, the social worker informed Angel’s mother about Helpster Charity and enrolled Angel for support. With assistance from Helpster Charity, Angel is now receiving appropriate medical treatment and care.

Angel received appropriate treatment, including antibiotics or antiviral medication as indicated, together with supportive care such as adequate fluids, fever and pain management, and close monitoring of her breathing and general condition. She responded well to treatment, with gradual improvement in her fever, breathing, appetite, activity level, and overall wellbeing. Once her condition had stabilized, she was discharged to continue recovering at home with instructions to complete the prescribed medication and attend follow-up as advised. A follow-up phone call with her caregiver confirmed that Angel has recovered well, is active, feeding normally, and currently has no concerning symptoms.

Following the diagnosis of severe pneumonia and initiation of appropriate treatment, Angel’s condition is expected to improve gradually. She will require close monitoring and strict adherence to prescribed treatment to prevent complications such as worsening respiratory distress or recurrent infection. Prognosis is good
