Lavender is the second-born child in a family of four and a Grade Six pupil at a rural junior school. She enjoys playing netball and singing, activities that make her lively and socially engaged with her peers. Her father sustains the family through small-scale farming, earning an average monthly income of about KES 2,500 to meet household needs. The family shares a pit latrine and fetches their drinking water from a borehole. Despite these modest living conditions, Lavender has a strong vision for her future and dreams of becoming a teacher after completing her education. Lavender developed symptoms of illness, including high fever, severe headaches, and convulsions that persisted for three days. Her condition progressively worsened as the family was unable to raise funds for medical treatment. Concerned about her deteriorating health, a neighbour who had learned about Helpster Charity during a chief’s baraza informed the family about the organisation’s support for vulnerable children. Guided by this information, Lavender’s family took her to Mechimeru Health Centre, hoping to access medical care with the support of Helpster Charity.

Lavendar was admitted and treated urgently for meningitis with appropriate intravenous medication, together with supportive care including fluids, fever control, and close monitoring for possible complications. She responded well to treatment and was discharged after her condition stabilized. One week after discharge, Lavendar returned to the hospital for a scheduled review, where she was assessed and confirmed to be recovering well. A further follow-up phone call one month later confirmed that Lavendar is now doing well, with no new concerns reported by her caregiver.

Following the diagnosis of meningitis and initiation of appropriate treatment, Lavender’s condition is expected to gradually improve with continued medical care. However, due to the seriousness of meningitis, Lavender will require close monitoring and strict adherence to prescribed treatment to prevent complications such as persistent neurological symptoms, hearing problems, or recurrent seizures.
