Kalmin is the third-born child in a family of four and a Grade Three pupil at a rural junior school. He enjoys playing with his siblings and is known to be an active and cheerful boy. His mother supports the family through a small-scale business that earns an approximate monthly income of KES 1,500. The family lives in a single-room rental house, fetches drinking water from a well, and shares a pit latrine with other households. Kalmin aspires to become a doctor in the future. Kalmin developed a harsh, barking cough accompanied by high fever and chest pain. His condition gradually deteriorated. Each time he coughed, he clutched his chest and throat in apparent pain, while his body temperature continued to rise daily. His mother attempted tepid sponging to lower the fever, but this did not provide any relief. Due to financial hardship, the family was unable to afford medical care. While Kalmin’s mother was on her way from a nearby chemist, where she had hoped to request medication on credit to temporarily relieve her son’s fever, she met a beneficiary of Helpster Charity. After listening to her concerns and learning about the family’s inability to pay for hospital services, the beneficiary advised her to take Kalmin to Mechimeru Health Centre, where Helpster Charity supports vulnerable patients with free medical treatment. Following medical evaluation at the facility, Kalmin was diagnosed with severe bronchopneumonia.

Kalmin’s was treated with a combination of appropriate antibiotics to target the infection, along with supportive care such as rest, fluids, and medications to reduce fever and ease breathing. In more serious phases and was closely monitored . As the treatment progressed, his cough and fever gradually subsided, breathing became easier, and energy levels improved. With full completion of therapy and follow-up care, Kalmin recovered well and was discharged to go home.

With prompt and appropriate treatment, which usually includes antibiotics, supportive care (like fluids and oxygen if needed), and rest, Kalmin will recover fully and return to normal activity and growth. Early treatment helps prevent complications and reduces the risk of long-term lung problems. If left untreated, broncho-pneumonia can become severe and life-threatening. The infection may worsen, causing respiratory failure, low oxygen levels, dehydration, or the spread of infection to other organs. Timely treatment usually results in complete recovery, while lack of treatment greatly increases the risk of severe illness or fatal outcomes.
