Nicole D., 9

Nicole is a nine-year-old girl in Grade Four and the fourth-born in a family of five children living in Awasi, Kisumu County. She comes from a humble background where her father is the sole provider, taking on any available casual work in the village, while her mother is a homemaker. Nicole is a cheerful and sociable child who enjoys playing with her peers, watching television at a neighbour’s home, and reading storybooks. She dreams of becoming a teacher in the future. One day, Nicole returned from school appearing unusually quiet and unwell. Her mother noticed she was not as cheerful as usual and learned that Nicole had been feeling sick since midday. Because of the long distance from school to home, her teachers kept her at school until evening so she could travel back safely with her older siblings. Later that evening, her condition worsened, and she was rushed to Awasi Catholic Mission Health Centre. After evaluation, the clinicians recommended admission, but the family initially declined due to fear of the hospital bill and planned to return home until they could raise funds. It was at this point that the social worker was informed to do a socioeconomic background interview, then after confirmation that they were indeed underprivileged, they were informed about the availability of free treatment through Helpster Charity, giving the family hope and enabling Nicole to receive the care she urgently needed.

Nicole was brought to the hospital in a very weak condition and required immediate medical attention. Upon assessment, the medical team initiated the appropriate treatment and closely monitored her progress throughout her admission. Over the course of three days, she responded well to the prescribed treatment, with a noticeable improvement in her strength, appetite, and overall condition. As her health continued to improve and she was considered clinically stable, she was discharged home with medications and appropriate follow-up instructions.

Nicole was diagnosed with bacteraemia, indicating that an infection had entered her bloodstream and required immediate hospital treatment. At the time of admission, her condition was concerning and required urgent antibiotics, close monitoring, and supportive care to prevent progression to life-threatening complications. With prompt and appropriate treatment, Nicole’s prognosis is good, and she is expected to make a full recovery. However, without timely medical care, bacteraemia can rapidly progress to severe complications.
